The Beemster was an inland lake until it was drained in 1612. The Beemster Polder is home to five forts that were part of a defensive ring known as the Defense Line of Amsterdam. The Defense Line is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Only Fort aan de Nekkerweg and Fort Spijkerboor are open to the public.
